I shuddered, unable to stop myself. His voice was like liquid fire, dripping across my skin and along my spine. I drew in a shaky breath, and shook my head, standing up. I swayed on my feet, but didn’t kept my balance. He wasn’t a man. He was a siekewa and I was letting a handsome face get under my skin. I closed my eyes for a brief moment, then looked toward Morgana.

Or where Morgana would have been. I turned to see her leaving the room, the tarot card pouch in her hands. I was alone with the siekewa, and I broke out in a cold sweat. I can leave anytime, I assured myself before facing him again. I crossed my arms and pursed my lips, meeting his eyes.

He was smiling, his damn crooked grin making him seem less dangerous. As it was, I could feel the magic radiating off of him. I didn’t need Ellie’s knack for reading power to know that the siekewa was beyond powerful. He reached up to push his hair out of his eyes, a ruby ring flashing on his finger.

“Why are you following me?” I demanded, taking an aggressive stance with my hip out, arms crossed.

“I don’t understand you.” He moved around the chair and all the hair on my arms stood on end. It took all my courage not to sprint from the room.

“I could say the same thing about you.” I chewed on the inside of my lip, wishing my knees weren’t shaking.

“You spend weeks trying to reach out to me. I mess with Morgana’s knife to give you the opportunity, and you are squandering it.” He flashed, and suddenly he was behind me, his chin falling forward on my shoulder. He was cold to the touch and smelled like ash.

I couldn’t help my squeal of terror as I turned around and leapt away. I hit the coffee table and started to fall. His reached around me, pulling me against his chest and stopping my pinwheeling with his strong arms. His power was overwhelming, and I shoved against him. He didn’t stop me from pulling away, but kept his hand on my shoulder until I’d maneuvered around the low table.

He was trying to control his laughter, and he bit his lower lip, pale blue eyes twinkling behind long lashes.

“You’re just trying to scare me. I don’t need this.” Steeling myself, I turned toward the door, my feet stomping on the tasteful teal rug.

“Am I not…enough for you?” The way he said the word froze me in my tracks, and I turned back to look at him. He wasn’t smiling anymore and the serious expression on his face exposed all my insecurities.

“Tell me your name.”

“What will you do with that information, little one?”

“I don’t want to call you monster.” I hadn’t thought about what I was saying, but I was surprised to find it was true. I didn’t want to call him siekewa, demon, monster, devil. I wanted to know who he was, because for some insane reason, I wanted him to like me.
